In the wake of the sudden and tragic passing of former New Brunswick Union Vice-President Al Mullin earlier this year, his family has found a way to honour his memory and giving spirit.
The first recipient of the Aloysius Mullin Scholarship was awarded to Abby Scott who graduated this spring from the North and South Esk Regional High School in Sunny Corner, NB.
The family – his wife Leanne and children Morgan and Kyle – established the scholarship with the criteria the recipient must be the child of a member of the NBU in good standing. The scholarship was also for a student from the area where Al grew up and attended school.
Abby is the daughter of NBU member Ashley Scott.
“We wanted to give back to the community and help a young person achieve their dreams of furthering their education,” said Leanne, Al’s wife. “Abby is a great student and person and we’re so proud she received the scholarship.”
President of the NBU, Susie Proulx-Daigle, said the tribute to Al is fitting as he was heavily involved in training the next generation of union members in his time with the NBU.
“Al valued education and spent countless hours conducting activist training,” Proulx-Daigle. “I know Al would be proud his family is helping the next generation achieve their goals through this scholarship.”
